Time Your Savings Series: Appliances
It's already been a hot summer and higher temperatures can lead to higher bills. On a Time-of-Day Rate, you have the opportunity to save energy and money with simple adjustments to how you use everyday appliances. You may already be doing some of these and saving!
Time-of-Day Savings Tip
Pre-cooling your home helps you stay comfortable while saving on air conditioning. Running your
pool pump or charging an electric vehicle during off-peak hours will also help you save.
Easy Ways to Save
TOD rates set electricity prices based on when you use energy (peak and off-peak periods). You can save by choosing the hours before 3 PM and after 7 PM on weekdays to use appliances that consume a lot of energy. Here are ways to save on everyday appliances and chores:
Washers and Dryers
Washers and dryers are some of the largest energy users. Save by doing the following:
- Do laundry on weekends when there are no peak hours. On weekdays, run washers and dryers during off-peak hours. If you start before 3 PM, also be sure to finish before 3 PM.
- Wash full loads in cold water, but don't overfill
- Line dry instead of using your dryer
- Clear your dryer's lint filter after each load
Dishwashers
A dishwasher consumes a significant amount of electricity and creates heat and humidity that can make your home feel warmer. You can:
- Start dishwasher just before bedtime.
- If it has a built-in timer, set it to run in off-peak hours.
- Wash full loads.
- Use the air-dry setting.
Electric Ovens and Stoves
The typical oven not only uses a lot of power, it adds extra heat that can make your air conditioning work harder in summer. So what can you do?
- Using the barbecue is a great way to save energy and enjoy a meal outdoors!
- Use smaller appliances like toaster ovens, microwaves and slow cookers instead of the oven -especially during peak hours.
